There is SO Much to LOTRO that inexperiece with the game can lead to "I should have" moments later in the game, once you get to know how it works.
Since there IS so much, it's going to be hard to really grasp what is important and what is a fundamental choice that will effect your entire game.
To Help with this, we'll create this thread as a Starter Guide(so to speak) to get you going and understanding what to do and when to do it.
Naturally, it goes without say, that you can play the game any way you like, that's why this is just a guide.
I will start this all off with a mini-list of Important versus Fundamental, noting that Fundamental things cannot be changed for various reasons, we'll discuss them in the thread as we go along.
IMPORTANT:

FUNDAMENTAL:

This is a very good site containing guides for beginners: http://lotro.mmorsel.com/
There is a huge amount of detail in this game, and this guide comes the closest to explaining it all for n00bs like me. I suggest that everyone give it a look.

Since is was NOT abundantly clear, you get the Riding Skill free if you do the quest at level 20 (which is quite a long wait in-game)
http://lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Quest:Proving_Your_Quality
Basically, once you reach level 20 you need to speak to Éogar, son of Hadorgar, he's at Hengstacer Farm which is directly north of the town BREE.
So if you want to save Turbine points AND spend 200 rather than 500 silver on a horse, then it may be worth your while to wait for level 20 and do the quest.

just one note:
the horse for 200 is called a bree starter horse. and frankly is slightly faster than walking.
Where as the horse for 500 is significantly faster....

mmorsel wrote:Rental horses are temporary mounts. All new characters get a Wrapped Horse Whistle in the level 5 Gift Pack, so you get a chance to experience LOTRO's wonderfully realistic horseback-riding animations. Once unwrapped you have use of the mount for 24 hours (tracked in real-time), so you may want to wait until you have a block of time to play. Additional temporary horses can be purchased from the LOTRO store.
/sigh - 24 hours real time!!!
