As Dazzie isn’t going to be there, he’s asked me to run the UT comp for him. As such I’ve put down a prospective list of rules and a format for the comp. Please feel free to post comments and suggestions, and we may be able to incorporate these.
After further investigation, we've upgraded the UT tournament to use UT3 rather than UT2K4. It's the newer game, and has all of the requisite game modes attached. It is also possible (allegedly) to LAN the game off a single copy. If this doesn't work, we'll revert to UT2K4.
After some discussion with Alex, who is an old school UTer, we’ve decided that we’re better off using UT2K4. It’s just better for running in a LAN environment. It also means that we’ll be able to play a round of my favourite UT mode, Assault (this was removed from UT3)
The biggest challenge is making the comp long enough (in terms of games) to be fun and challenging, but not so long that we battle to fit all of the games in. I think that I’ve struck a reasonable balance here, but would appreciate any thoughts/ideas/suggestions. I also want to incorporate as many of the gametypes as possible.
When making suggestions, please bear in mind that there will be two other comps running over the weekend, and we only have two days total to fit them all in (Friday and Saturday)
If you are wanting to sign up for this comp (I hope that the majority of us will), you need to be sure that you will be able to make it to the Dome and set up at a reasonable hour on Friday, as the comp can’t start until everyone is there (the first round involves everyone). I’d like to kick the placement round off by 11am on Friday at the latest. I’d like to get the first 2 rounds finished on Friday, with the remainder of games being played on Saturday.
Finally, because of the structure of the comp, we need to ensure that we have an even number of players. I’d like to get everyone who is keen signed up ASAP, so that we can invite a guest player is required in order to balance the numbers.

Rules:
The competition will be structured as follows (maps to be decided once I’ve had a chance to look at the game!!):
Round 1 (Placement DM): This will be a placement match, over two maps. Everyone is included in 2 DM games, each one having a 20 minute time limit. Players will sum the scores of both rounds, with the final score being used to determine the ranking. The ranking out of this match will determine pool placement, with the odd numbered players being placed in Pool A, and the even numbered players being placed in Pool B. No points are awarded in this round, it’s simply for Pool placement. If players have equal scores at the end of the game, they will be ordered alphabetically by nick. Not that this really matters, this game is only for pool assignment.
The two maps to be used in this round are 'Plunge' and 'Metallurgy'
Round 2 (Standard Duels): Each player will play each of the others in their pool in a duel game. Each duel takes place over a single round, with the winner of each match getting 1 point. Each round has a 5 minute time limit, with sudden death enabled in the event of a time at the end of this period. This round of duels runs with no mutators, other than the fact that adrenaline is turned off, and all weapons are enabled.
Map selection will be done in one of two ways. Either the duellers can agree on a map between them, or one will be selected by drawing out of a hat. The pool of maps for the duels are as follows: 'Albatross', 'Crash', Desolation', Idoma', Irondust', 'Mixer', 'Spirit', 'Squader', 'Trine', 'Gael' , 'Insidious' and 'Leviathan'
Round 3 (Team based 1 – Capture the flag): The two Pools square off against each other over 2 rounds of team based combat, the first being Capture the Flag. This round has a 20 minute time limit, once again with Sudden Death enabled in the event of a draw. Winning the round nets all of the players in the team 2 points, and the top scorer in each team will also get a bonus point.
This game will be played on either 'Face3' or 'January', so practice both
Round 4 (Team based 2 – Assault): The second team based round uses the Assault game type, which is an attack/defend scenario, much like rush mode in BC2. The first team to attack does it in the quickest time possible, and then teams swap around, with the second attacking team having only as long as the first team took to complete the objective. The time limit for this round will be set at 10 minutes. Scoring for this round is the same as for the Capture the Flag round, except that there is the posibility of a draw, in which case no team points will be allocated (although the top scorer individual points are still up for grabs).
This round will be played on the 'Glacier' map
Round 5 (Instagib Duels): This round of duels makes use of the instagib mutator (only shock rifles are used, and a hit means a kill). In these duels, players compete against all of the players from the other pool, not their own. These matches have a 5 minute time limit, once agin with Sudden Death enabled, and each match is played over a single round with the winner receiving 1 point.
Map selection is the same as for the standard duels
Once all of the 5 rounds have been completed, points will be totalled, resulting in final ranking for all players. This being a league type competition, there are no finals. The player with the highest number of points is the winner. In the event that players are tied on points, they will enter the tie-breaker round
Tie breaker round: Any players that end up level on points will play a tie-breaker. A tie-breaker game is a three round duel, using all weapons, each round having a 5 frag limit. Best of 3.
Each tie breaker round will be played on a different map, all chosen at random from the standard duel maplist
