Hamachi is great tool for emulating a LAN over the internet.
Basically, you install it, then load it up. It connects to a central server somewhere on the internet, this is where you CREATE a network With a name and password.
Other clients then do the same, install and connect to the central server, but they then CONNECT to the network name with the password you used.
Basically, this then creates a Peer to Peer VPN between everyone that joins (up to 16 people). That means it's Local rather than international.
Very useful tool for games that are LAN only, or have LAN capability and Internet servers are just way too far away and will result in high latency and therefore massive LAG.
It's Free for non-commercial use!

Sounds lekka... however, I swear I've read somewhere before about Hamachi and compatibility problems with windoze/games?

I've used it to play COD4 before connecting over the internet, to four guys playing on a lan who had an internet connection. Works great.
