4870X2 for sale

Post by J_Th4ng »

Okay, my new graphics card (5870) finally moved off back order and arrived yesterday, eventually completing my new rig.

So, my 'old' Sapphire Radeon 4870X2 is now looking for a new home. The card is a year old, has never been overclocked (never needed to) and has lived in a well ventilated case for it's entire life.

Performance wise, this card is superb. It's still in the top five graphics cards available at this stage. It's able to run every game I own at 1920x1200 with everything on full and 4xAA without any noticable slowdown. The only exception to this is Crysis, but I don't think that even a 5970 could run this acceptably with those settings.

So, if the card is so good, why did I upgrade? Actually, my new card isn't much of an upgrade at all - the new card is almost identical in performance to the old one. Two reasons:

1. Future upgradability - I plan on adding a second 5870 some time next year. This will keep me going graphics wise for a long time
2. DX11. I'm a sucker for new feature sets, and the 4XXX series cards only support DX10.1

So how much do I want for it? Difficult question really. The card still retails for >R5000 new, but the new 5870 is only ~R4500, so it's not worth that price.

I reckon R3000 is a good price for the card. I will however entertain all reasonable offers from grrr members and friends, it's more about getting other people to enjoy the benefits of the card than the money TBH. Keep in mind that Bad Company 2 is going to require significant graphics power to run well, and this card is perfectly suited to provide that.

As always, I'm also flexible with regards to payment terms, I know that not everyone will have R3000 lying around at any momoent in time, so we could arrange a series of deferred payments if it helps.

If you're interested, please let me know fairly soon, as I'll want to open the offer up to the general community if no one in the clan is interested.

Here's a review of the 4870X2 from back when it was launched last year: http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-4870-x2-review-crossfire/

Damn this is tricky, I have been looking at this and fo R3000 it really is good value for your money. But I have to problems, I need to upgrade next year. I wasn't planning on upgrading my PSU (I have a 550w) and this card needs 650W, so that would be an extra R800 - R1000.

Like I said, I will let you know in the new year but if you find a buyer in the mean time then go for it
