YouTube Intro - Work In Progress

Post by SlipperyDuck »

Yep, I've been scarce around here for a while, reason -
3D Studio MAX - O.M.G. that beast is complicated and powerful.

Having to learn a 3d program from the ground up, how things tie together, how to achieve what you want to achieve - these be the absolutely HUGE mountains that I've been climbing over the last couple of weeks.

To add to it all, it's a difficult process, doing small things can literally take hours, mostly because I'm a noob and have to try figure out how to do it, but also because you have to WAIT and WAIT a lot for things to process, simulate, BAKE etc etc, nothing seems to be straight forward. - Anyway, I suppose unless you actually play with this monster, you have no frame of reference as to the monumental task it has been to make these tiny clips - just the logo clip - all 7 seconds of it, took 11 HOURS to render down to the 180 frames that make the video...it's mind boggling the processing required.

First off, this is a work in progress, I know there are a lot of things to fix, it's trial and error due to the long processing time and what have you, so bare with me until the final render that should look smooth and slick (hopefully).

My Idea is to have several of these, opening with a 5/6 second 'sketch' and then the grrrLogo at the end.

The 'sketch' here is not really all that great, since it was done with the DEFAULT RENDER ENGINE which does not calculate light bouncing (radiosity), so it's flat/boring when it comes to colour and depth, I was also trying to figure out the animation system, so everything is very rough, bottom line is that this is just the "proof of concept" and hopefully grrreat things will come. You'll see the difference between the Sketch and the Logo portion of the VID.

As it stands, the model and animation system, I am catching glitches and fixing them little piece by little piece and gaining valuable experience along the way, so this is a good journey and by the end of it, I should have a character that can be used to do anything we like for furture sketches. - sky is the limit, not even.

OK, so learning how to do it right is a long process - I've had to start from the beginning again several times as I encountered problems and worked to fix them - only to discover later that some of these things are down to how you start the project and they cannot be fixed mid-way.

Anyway, hard at work on a completely new model from scratch - will be getting some facial animation working, the works basically, so that I can do something awesome with our "mascot".

I'd love it if some guys had some "storyboard-like" ideas for scense.

eg: GRRRMan arrives in a jungle, jumps out of his jeep, grabs a LMG and begins running, breaks through a fence into a compound, buts down the door and bursts in with Gun ready
*pause*
[focus on face] GRRRMAN: "you know when you walk into a room and forget what you came to do?"
* short pause *
[zoom out] GRRRMAN: "Oh, now I remember......raaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrggghh!"
grrrman opens fire.
END

Them kinda things.

GRRRman bursts in on some BF3 characters having a tea party, opens fire and then serves them his own special blend.
