Book Review: Out of America

Post by Megageth »

[info]Image[/info]Ya ya, there is no section for book reviews and yes, I did manage to finish a book that didn't have a glossy cover with a naked woman on it.

Out of America by Keith B Richburg.

If you live in Africa. Get it. Read it.

Its written by a black American journalist who gets sent by the Washington Post to Nairobi during the early 90's to cover east and central Africa. Its a memoir of his encounters with Africa, being his first visit and being a foreign black man on African soil.
What makes it so friggin good that I would both finish it and bother to write a review? Its the most honest piece of writing I have ever come across covering the subject of African politics and it holds no punches. The author was there for the break-down of Somalia and the genocide in Rwanda (amongst other gems of African history) and has good journalistic integrity.

If you have been nauseated by the excuses generated by African bias and white post-colonial guilt that get churned out by Africa's dictatorial and corrupt politicians then you will enjoy it. It does not solve any problems but it does give a refreshingly honest account that you won't read in the papers.

9/10 on the Mega scale of PDA. (Pretty Damned Awesome)
