Tribes: Ascend

Post by J_Th4ng »

Hey guys,

For those of us who fancy trying new out new games periodically, there's a new Tribes game out, and it's available for free on Steam.

For anyone who's nbever played Tribes, it's quite a different spin on the typical FPS game. All kit loadouts come complete with a jetpack that enable you to grab serious air,m and one can ski down hills allowing some pretty impressive movement, and ridiculous speed when you get it right.

Maps are huge, there are vehicles, and sautomated base defenses. In all, the game is very complex, and offers great tactical variety.

As I said, the base game is absolutely free to play, and by levelling up and gaining experience, you'll be able to unlock all of the weapons and gadgets in the game. You can of course get advantages through micro-transactions, but you can't buy yourself to better gear that anyone can earn through simply playing the game.

So guy, I hope that a few people at least will give this a go. The download is about 4GB, so about the size of a BF3 patch ;) .

There aren't SA servers at this time, but I've played a bit on the European servers which look to be fairly well populated, and the lag is not noticable at all. Given that this game is nowhere near as twitchy as BF (or heaven forbid, CoD), the latency isn't an issue at all. At the same time, timing and prediction are very important, as most weapons aren't hitscan, so you have to predict where the enemy will be when your shot gets to them.

This has the makings of a superb game, so get downloading!!

PS My username is Dr4g0nn3,a nd my soldier name is Dragonne. If you download, add me to your friends list.

Good to see the gaming is still alive and well in you Jarrod. I have been wanting to try out Tribes for a long time, purely because of the jetpack crazy mid air grenade shot vids I have seen.

I am DEFINITELY trying it. Will download today.

*EDIT: Ok, trying it out - Ph4tso is my soldier name.

The game is a shitload of fun, but has a moerof steep learning curve.
Much fun for free though and its a good break from the sometimes monotony of BF3 ;)
Very playable @ 200ms latency funnily enough, even sniping.

TLDR: if you have the bandwidth to spare, get it for funzies :D

For anyone in Jozi, I have a Steam Backup of the game with me that anyone who wants can have. Just need to bring an external drive, and I'll pop the files on for you. The backup is about 3.5GB.
