Hey guys,

Overheard Skouperd mention the other day that he wants to host a LAN and Braai at his place, (I've got a pool and place to braai, but not the network infrastructure that Denis has)

Just thinking it could be fun getting everyone together and jam a bit.

Now please this is not just for the CPT peeps, if you willing to drive down, fly in you most welcome to join.

Please let us know how you feel and/or any suggestions.

Badass

Awesome Mikey, sal met Denis weer praat oor n moontlike datum, weet hy is die volgende 3 dae in Jhb, maar dink hy sal wel n draai maak op die forums en sy insigte gee.

Ok, since badass jumped the gun... here's the deal.

I do indeed need to arrange another LAN party, the cob-webs in my CAT5 need to be cleaned again. However, not everybody is keen for the LANNING part and dragging PC’s around etc, so what I am thinking is the following:

  1. I want to host the LAN party the weekend of the 7[SUP]th[/SUP] December, but really start playing serious games only on the Saturday the 8[SUP]th[/SUP] only. Picking that weekend is just before the long weekend which may be already occupied elsewhere and before people start taking leave yet long enough in advance to keep it open.
  2. This will allow us to braai the Friday evening, the 7[SUP]th[/SUP], and for those that would want to participate in the LAN coming through to the braai will provide them an opportunity to bring their computers through and start setting them up. For those that are not keen for the LAN part of it, they obviously just attend the braai and leave the PC’s at home.
  3. Shall we say the bring and braai commence 18:30 on Friday, with wives, girlfriends, kids all welcome. BTW, I do not have a swimming pool, so your kids should be fine.
  4. That means the LAN can commence on Saturday morning from around 09:00 meaning everybody can still get in his or her beauty sleep and what not for a serious session of gaming the Saturday. We continue playing the LAN until the last person goes to bed on Sunday morning.

I should be able to accommodate about 40 people on the network without any major networking issues, but from a logistic point of view, the sooner we can get numbers in, the better it will be as I may have a problem with:

  • Parking space for so many cars, so where possible we may need to arrange transport / lifts etc.
  • I do not have so many chairs, so if you could please bring your own then that will help.
  • Depending on the number of people, we may end up playing in two rooms (Games room can accommodate about 15 people, while the workshop can accommodate another 25 or so). If we exceed 40 people, we will need to move into the house where I can accommodate a fair number more but then they will be restricted to only a 2Gb backbone onto the servers / rest of the LAN.
  • I will have access to CTWUG with a DC server running, so if there is anybody that would like to queue downloads for the Friday evening please feel free to do so.
  • Internet access will be available (steam verification etc.), but if you want to play internet games, then rather just do it from home because the idea of a LAN is that it is a LAN!

Without any preference to the games, this is more or less the games that I was thinking off that we’ve played at previous LANs very successfully:
Strategy:

  • Supreme Commander Forged Alliance (maximum 8 players)
  • Company of Heroes
  • Starcraft / Warcraft
  • Age of Empires 3
  • Age of Empires 2
  • Empire Earth
  • World in Conflict

Racing / Crashing

  • Split second (maximum of 8 players)
  • Insane (maximum of 8 players)
  • Flatout2
  • TrackMania original

FPS

  • Serious Sam co-op
  • Crysis wars
  • Borderlands 2 (only 4 players)
  • Counter Strike
  • BF2 / BF1948

Other

  • Tiger Woods
  • Worms
  • Scorch3D (I haven’t played this game in ages, but we have to as it is an awesome game!)
  • Online Poker
  • Risk / Monopoly (ok, now I am getting desperate!)

Some games that comes recommended or which I forgot to include:

  • Speedball 2
  • ?
  • ?
  • ?

General rules of a LAN party:

  • Bring deodorant
  • Whatever you consume, bring it with
  • Use earphones, speakers may drive everybody to insanity
  • Remember your power cables, mouse pad, mouse, keyboard, monitor, pc. I will provide a LAN cable
  • Use your deodorant every now and again
  • Do not spill your drink on somebody’s pc. A suggestion, get yourself a sealed bottle (1lt coke bottle works well) so that when (not if) somebody bumps it over, no damage to your or your buddy’s pc will occur.

General stuff you can do before a LAN to make it more enjoyable for yourself and everybody else:

  • Download the latest Microsoft Security Essentials, and run a full scan on your pc. We don’t want your viruses floating around on the LAN.
  • Write down all your network properties. At the LAN, a manual IP will be assigned to you or a DHCP server will assign one to you.
  • Do NOT update your drivers the night before the LAN. If the pc is working, don’t break it. I have seen many a LAN party ruined because somebody decided to download the latest beta drivers for their graphics card the night before the LAN and then was unable to play anything at the LAN party.
  • Generally sharing of files at a LAN party is acceptable. However, just make sure the files that you share are indeed the files you want to share.
  • As mentioned I will have a DC++ hub running, so, what you could do potentially is just hash the files you would like to share before the time.
  • If there is a game you would like to play, ensure that you have a cracked copy of the said game and that you know how to setup a server for the said game
  • When you have ensured your PC is clean from viruses, please disable any and all firewalls. You could leave Microsoft Security Essentials running, but in most instances if you cannot connect onto the network, it is because some anti-virus or some firewall is blocking you.

Apart from that, make sure you get to bed early on Friday evening, and that you have enough brownie points in hand before you tell the better half about your plan to spend the Saturday gaming!

Now, without further ado, can we please get a show of hands for the following?

  1. I will attend the bring and braai on Friday, the 7[SUP]th[/SUP] of December

  • Skouperd + 1
  • BadAss + 1
  • .
  • .
  • .

  1. I will attend the LAN starting on Saturday the 8[SUP]th[/SUP] of December

  • Skouperd
  • BadAss
  • .
  • .
  • .

  1. I would also like to include the following games that we should play:

  • ?
  • ?

Hey Denis. I will know closer to the time. Unfortunately there is no way I can know in advance what my schedule is going to be like. I'm very keen.
