Ok I am going to stop this right here. You know that if you press ~ you can enter commands and change the config? This is only temporary i.e. for that session. Because it is available in BF4 according to the TOS it is legal. So changing the config file is legal as all you are doing is preloading the configs you would type out.

It is the same as instead of adding petrol directly to the engine you are adding it to the tank.

Now everyone STOP GOING FULL RETARD

Until there is an official statement about this from EA/DICE/PB/EvenBalance/Fairplay, there is nothing wrong with trying to get the most out of the game FPS wise.

You can get more FPS out of ingame changes, custom graphics, low graphics, medium graphics etc. The only way to get extra FPS more so than what you can from ingame settings is if you turn off certain things being drawn on the screen. In my mind, if EA wanted you to turned those things down they would have catered for it in the game as they have catered for a whole host of other settings. As such, by not catering for it in the game tells me that they don't want you to edit it. Using third party tools to FORCEFULLY edit it, is going against the very TOS of EA.

Regarding you wanting an official statement. I appreciate the below is not as "official" as a blog post, but EA has said here that no third party tools are allowed to make any changes even if it does not change the game content.

I'm gonna chip in here to say that a user.cfg file is only calling commands that are built into the engine. There are lists floating around with the full command suite and none do anything other than tweak your graphics settings and/or controls. I can understand where you're coming from in terms of it giving you an advantage, but if you're not running the game at optimum for your setup then aren't you just putting yourself at that disadvantage?

I mean, people looking for better gameplay often turn down settings - does that make them cheaters to guys with beast PC's and ultra settings? Maybe, but I don't think it gives them an unfair advantage, it's all about getting solid consistently high frames for your system. Even with a beast PC, there is something to be said for running on low graphics as your PC will generally run quicker and smoother even if it is barely noticable you may just get better stability.

For sure there may be people who use the engine to exploit the game, but the config stuff posted poses no threat in that regard.Console's give people a common base to play off but PC's are as you know a lot more complicated in some ways. It's not like turning off motion blur gives you an aimbot or invulnerability. I encourage everyone to use a config file to ensure they get a consistent and playable game.

We could always send EA an email asking if it's OK, but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't even respond or would approve it without fuss. To be honest I've never even read the TOS, I never do. But as Tyger said, it's all legal gobbledygook to cover them in case of a negative event. I'd be interested to see the specific TOS portion you refer to, it's interpretation may be the issue and hopefully we can put your mind at ease.
