Okay, I've finally got pricing from Wayne at Hypgamez wrt to the cost of hiring a BF3 server. Email is enclosed below.

I think that Geth's idea of sharing a rented server with another clan is a great one, and think it would be a great idea for management to contact the likely candidates (BBH and possibly SSG).

I'd go for a 32 player server shared with BBH or SSG. R720 or R360/pm per clan seems really reasonable.

Geez that is quite pricey, I think if we share a 32 player server with another Clan that should be affordable.

I think we should start with a 16 plyr server and make enquiries when we order as to whether we can upgrade to more slots if needed. Clannies are normally 8 v 8 format, so we shouldn't really need more than 16 slots. The servers seem relatively expensively-priced to me, and our experience with Hype Gamez servers has not always been pleasant. Caution must be employed.

We don't know what format BF3 clannies will be yet, 8v8 is traditional, but if the maps are not scalable, 8v8 may not be enough.

With regards the pricing, a 16 player server is actually cheaper than what we paid for BC2, which was closer to R600 pm.

As it stands now, I agree with Lee's suggestion that a 32 player server, shared with another clan would be a good compromise. We certainly have more money coming into the Slush fund every month than would be required to cover the server rental costs.

I would want to partner with the SSG guys if possible. BBH are cool okes and all but one of the reasons to partner is that we have some one to prac against. I think we would improve and get more out of prac against SSG guys than BBH.

If we have a 32 player server, surely we can select 16 player only maps as well? I would agree with Lee, 32 player.

Yes Denis, I would expect that you can configure to a lesser number of players if you want to. I agree with Paul too, SSG would be a good choice as a clan to prac against.

Wasn't BF2 clan matches mostly 12v12?

My thoughts... those prices are not cheap. Definitely an awesome idea to share a server with someone. Personally... I'd wait till the league is starting before getting a server. At least the first couple months I expect us all to go mad on the public servers enjoying the game before we all start thinking about clan matches. 100 hours per kit to get full upgrades... we going to be working on doing that.

I hear you Murgles, but clan servers can be ranked ;) I noticed RFH's BC2 performance improved dramatically by simply always playing on their own server, even though it was open to the public during non-clan times. Ok they recruited like crazy, but credit is due for turning that random cluster of acnophobes into a force that challenged more established teams in a very short period of time. Youthful enthusiasm and stubbornness can go a long way in a world of adult commitments and debate convergence.

I also hear Geth's concearns, but I think we should examine the facts. If we map out who can play, when they can play and how often they should play to meet the captain's competitive objective; we have the makings of an acceptable training regime (maybe even monthly contribution if we field two full teams) which any player seriously considering themselves for selection must submit to. The captains objective and the training regime required to meet it should pretty much dictate whether we should recruit or not and when to get the server.

Can we seriously expect improvements in competitive success if we try to agree and implement a regime, server and team(s) once the league is upon us?

I feel sorry for our captain elect already :D All that said, you guys are the voices of reason here... a clan affiliation also means conflict over usage. Another random thought which is also probably completely useless is that a 32 player server should also mean more traffic and better publicity for the clan in case we decide to field non-clan players vying for clan status at some stage in the future. I have seen other clans recruit, test and kick out unsuitable new players on an ongoing basis to keep a second team full and ensure commitment from existing members.
