Regarding the skill tree, while you are somewhat correct, I have actually read that they made the tree a little more forgiving. There was a big shuffle around/tweaking in this most recent content patch.
You can deviate from all the prebuilt builds to a certain degree, depending on playstyle. There are nodes however known as "notables" "keystones" that are key to any build. Think of these as "game-changers" in your build that would make certain skills either epic and core, or lacklustre and not worth. Extract from:
http://www.pathofexile.com/passive-skill-treeAlongside the regular passive skills are Notable and Keystone passives. Notables have slightly larger icons, specific names and larger effects. They help guide players to build their characters on a macro level, allowing them to see at a glance what a cluster of passives skills does by examining its Notable passive. Keystone passives, however, fundamentally change the way a character is played by altering the game rules. They usually have one positive effect and one negative effect. For example, Necromantic Aegis takes away the properties of your shield, granting them to your minions instead of to you.
Also, here are some examples of Keystones:

Of course you can get hit from spells cast by mobs off the screen. This happens in big open areas. Thats like saying "getting shot from somewhere". This game isn't supposed to be easy.
Re graphics, meh, personal preference. I like it because its gritty.
If people want information, I will provide, but the days of me begging people to play games are over.
