This is exactly what I am talking about lets get some new ideas going.


Along the lines of what Hubris said, ja maybe we could be come the community match pimp. Set up some kind of system where people register a team and other teams can challenge them. We can have a few format e.g. 8 vs 8, squad rush, TDM etc.

Then teams arrange matches but themselves against each other but the results are kept so when a team wants to challenge another team they know their history.

This will cater for teams who want to

a) Play different formats
b) Don't want play constantly
c) Who have erratic schedules


It will be like a hybrid Pickup-Friendly system. Chances are it won't attract the likes of NSD/ELEMENT/BvD but I see definitely interest from new clans or casual clan e.g. BuD, DAC, wrG etc basically you determine how serious to take it.

Top post there Steff. I like your thinking. For me, I've shied away from competitive BF3 because of the time commitments, and my lack of 'win at all costs' mentality.

Putting together a fun league would be something that I'd love to be a part of. We'd need to figure out the logistics of it, and how it would work financially, but I think it's a great idea.

Russian you clown. Well it was Ducky's idea some time ago to do something grrr visionish, I just wasn't in the mindset to understand where he was coming from. So I hope whatever ideas we come up with still fit that plan.

This is an exciting time guys. Competitive gaming will take off in SA and we can play an amazing role in that. Off the top of my head, some of the things that are really missing and individuals in the community have been trying to fill somewhat successfully:

MULTI GAME MULTI PLATFORM COMPETITION & COMMUNITY
National Casual and Unrestricted Leagues
Interprovincial Tournaments
Inter-city Tournaments
Individual Championships
Online Journalism - Twitch.tv / YouTube streams and roundups in addition to the traditional web media like sites, blogs etc.
Social and Mobile Media Journalism - Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, iPhone/Android apps you name it.
Server Hosting (Big one, potentially with some serious dollar attached to it)

Traditional Sport gives a great model upon which to build a gaming industry, since they are after all very compatible concepts. Clans are akin to Clubs, the sponsors just have different names and the supporters don't go to Stadiums but to the web! My initial thoughts have just been based off that local sport model, but gaming has so much more flexibility than traditional sports there's no reason that other types of competition and community formats can't emerge and flourish.

There are some territory issues with MSSA and existing "e-Gaming hosts and journo's" but I think there is so much oppertunity to secure a dominant position in both the hosting and journo spaces if done PRO. Sure there is DGL, but many people don't even realise that MSSA don't recognise DGL as an "official" tournament for SA colours. They may make exceptions, when SA guys do really well (MSSA need the publicity) but in the main eGaming is all community made. It's always been like that and I think until gaming is irrefutably an Olympic sport the Government will be miles behind in the support they should be providing to nurture and grow Gaming.

Lets be honest, the Government doesn't even support the Olympic teams it has properly so we can't expect any hand outs.

We look at this very much through the lens of Battlefield and to truly be an MGO we need to broaden our scope. For sure, we need to consider whether it is possible for us to fulfill the MGO boots or maybe just aim to hit something good on the Battlefield level. Anyway, as Miles says, we are light years ahead in the thinking and in our positioning to do something really special. It all comes down to whether we can scramble the talents of everyone in grrr and come up with something truly amazing that we would all be proud to be part of. Perhaps most excitingly, gaming globally is in it's infancy and we can come up with something totally paradigm shattering.

Obviously the nuts and bolts of how to make these types of things work is tricky: there's real world money, sponsors, hosts and man hours that need to go into something like this, BUT at this early stage don't worry about that. We need to be thinking broad, beyond South Africa and beyond "Rival-X-Factor". We've all seen how gaming has exploded on YouTube with lots of guys actually making careers and rent paying incomes out of it, there's no reason South Africa can't start some really progressive thinking in this area. If you know anything about YOGSCAST or other YouTube brands you will know this is a dynamic, exciting and growing real dollar industry.

Guys, this is a call to greatness. Give it some thought while you fap, sit on the toilet, whatever. We need your brain powas! I'm putting some more thought into fleshing out the above ideas and getting into the nitty gritty of how it would work, but I really want to encourage you guys to think about these issues and let fly with WHATEVER comes to mind. The most powerful force in the world is the internet, which gets it's power from the groundswell nature of the community and all things community oriented. WE NEED YOU! If you can think of ways for grrr to grow into a true MGO with a larger player base, let fly! It's all good!

2 Part Plan

Part 1
I think we should keep a start up list going for the DGL in the meantime. We are usually in a situation where half the team can make pracs and wants to put in time but the others cant. We have recruited a few players recently, lets see the interest levels and let those who sign up decide their fate going into the DGL.

Part 2
'Awesome 4some'. Try to say it in hallowed tones. Like you are calling to the ghost of your favourite uncle.
We can launch a casual gaming league.
The issue for casual gamers is that games are not balanced and hence not fun. So, Teams could be entered as 4 instead of 8.
Then the organisation can pit 2 x 4 random teams against each other. The randomness should help balance out games, the fact that you will not have played or prepped with the other half of your team means that tactics are on the fly and squad play will get you through.
One game a week, on a Sunday night. Can be rotated through game play modes (assuming they exist in BF4) eg 8v8 conquest, Squad DM etc
We should have no difficulty getting interest at the launch of BF4 from clans like WrG, BuD etc
Teams should be 4+2res and a ranking/scoring system to follow results and help balance the match-ups.

PS there has been a lot of talk about "vision" and such but from my side it sounds like marketing spiel. What are we selling? Build it and they will come, not sell it and they will buy.

PPS If the 4some idea takes off, I wont be able to run it but volunteer to help in admin and be a reserve on a team and make my usual snide remarks from the bench.

OK cool this is great, let the creative juices flow. I will most likely be looking for a new job next year but I should also have more time to run with this kind of thing.

Hubris has got some good ideas and we need to explore them, think one of the best routes is to start small, there is a ton off stuff mentioned and we can't be everything to everyone and we can't do everything from the start.

Personally if we could be the organisers of an "alternative" casual league plus Gamer Journalism that would be a good place to start

FFS Stef, glad you have been phlisolophizing bro! Excellent post with some great ideas. From my side, I am keen as beans for everything.

I like the thoughts of something different regarding a more fun BF4 league, but it is going to be a challenge regarding the fact that BF3 league has a shitload of following from major clans and these guys will no doubt be on board from the start of BF4, wanting to get into it. They will want the hardcore league, the prize money league, the street cred league. We would need to make ours just as, if not more appealing.. Don’t know how to do this BUT...

We can only hope that BF4 has some form of spectator mode. This means that we could shoutcast games live and stream them. We’ve all seen the power of Twitch.tv (if you haven’t go look NOW), the gamers themselves have their following, but the shoutcasters / tournament channels have the major following. Picture Sunday night’s final. Its being streamed from 1 guy from NSD and 1 guy from BvD… That is all good, but imagine having an actual cameraman filming the game, commentating, jumping from battle to battle.. That is gaming entertainment. Start with BF4.. and move onto other games. Start streaming shitloads of different games, grow the name, the brand, the vision, collect followers, get a fanbase and boom – sky is the limit.

I have spoken in the past about streaming but my previous DSL line wouldn’t allow it… I have a feeling my new line can handle it and am going to start experimenting again with the goal of getting it right this time. Once this is done, we can embed the stream on our homepage or whatever. Use it to spring board the brand and create a “stadium” like setting for this league.
