Still work in progress... but figured since I have the back panel all worked out, I'd post a picture.Attachment 508

comments:
1. I am using half blind, variable space, dove tails to attach the top panel to the back panel. You can see the pins in the picture on the top.
2. The IO' shield is sunked in and cut to such dimensions that the IO plate is held in place by nothing more than friction alone. Ie. same as in any metal case.
3. The top right cut-out is 120mm by 120mm suitable for either a 120mm fan or a 120mm watercooler, both capable to be held in place by friction alone.
4. PCI slots have been trimmed down as to allow easier airflow and cut from the same piece of wood as the back panel (i.e. no inserts). The PCI slots is about 4mm high and about 3mm wide. Thereby compliant with ATX2.0 standards.
5. The bottom hole is for the power supply. The design is different than the previous case made from wood (http://blog.skoups.com/?p=272) in that the PSU is bottom mounted and not side top mounted as per the Mahogany case.
More pictures will follow and if everythign goes according to plan, the case should be ready for rAge 2013.

looking forward to seeing it :)

I imagine making wooden pc cases can be very satisfying.

I'm just looking, and I prefer eating walnuts
-
Looking good, what's the expected weight on completion?
-
Morph, all i can say is that i have learnt a lesson on the mahogany built which i think is coming in at about 35kg (if not more) with all its drives installed. I recon this one should come in at about 15kg fully setup. Bear in mind that it will only have one or two 2.5" drives, also it is a lot smaller than the previous built.
Mega you are so correct! I am not sure what is more fun, designing it , building it, or playing on it. What i can definatly confirm carry it around is not fun!

A close up of the half blind dovetail joints as seen from the front.

The pieces of wood is starting to look like the resemblance of a pc case.
Attachment 511
I am treating the wood with Danish low lustre oil.

Progress now is slow because of the time lapse between oil coats.

You going to do some venting holes in the side with a 200mm Fan - ie. uber cooling?
-
Hi Lee, no, the only cooling is the 120mm fan on the bottom that will act as an intake fan. The CPU is cooled by an H70 Corsair water cooler (blowing air out at the back). The bottom have space for 200mm (by 120mm) fan if more cooling is needed. Bear in mind that this is more a LAN pc (media PC) rather than an uber high end gaming rig.
