Onboard Lan not detected

ON Sunday my PC packed up. I was working on it in the morning and then in the afternoon when I went to switch it on it was dead!. The Mobo lights were on but when you pressed the power nothing happened.

There was a major storm inbetween so I thought it was struck but lightning. I don't have any spare parts to test with so I took it to a near by PC place to check out. They tell me it is not because of lightning and that the power supply simply packed up. They put in a new power supply and tuned me it was good to go.

I went and picked it up and brought it back home but not the onboard lan is not being detected. Therefore i have no internet. Any one got any ideads?

I have gone into the BIOS and made sure the on board lan is enabled, infact I restored the defaults to the bios.

In System --> Hardware Devices, it is only picking up the 1394 Network adapter, there is no NIC nothing, not even the yellow box with the question mark saying there is a problem.

I re-installed the chipset mobo drivers

I don't think the MOBO is fried because everything else works, there are even 2 USB port directly below the LAN port and they work.

The orange activity light is always on but the green speed light is never on.

Would it be easier for me to just get a LAN card and stick it in?

Insert a lan adaptor into one of the spare pci slots on your motherboard and you are good to go and its cheap also, otherwise replace the mobo. The same happened with my pc 2 months ago and i just inserted a lan adaptor on my motherboard :)

Ja that is what I was thinking, for the sake of R100 I am pulling my hair out, only thing I am worried about is that this is a symptom of a larger problem.

the pc was defo's struck by lightning

is your router still fine?

normally this happens when there is a surge over the telephone line....

as for the power supply..... could just be it was on its last leg due to the not to constant power we have in sa.
if the psu was struck by lightning you would be replacing the whole thing now

The router seems fine although I will only be able to Fully test once the I get the LAN working. I hooked up my work laptop to the router and the "network" light on the route lit up were previously it didn't with my desktop.

So I assumed the cable was cool and the router was cool

ja, get yerself an el-cheapo Network card from Incredible corruption, or any local PC store and you should be up and runnign soon.

I've had that happen to me.... Network cards are a bit on the sensitive side...you're pretty lucky, I've had a whole motherboard blow too.....

yup - new network card - same happened to me 2008 rage. sorted with new card. :)

Ya, pci/e lan is good solution.

If you want to troubleshoot the onboard LAN adapter I would suggest the following:
1. Check that the PC shop didn't disable onboard LAN in the BIOS.
2. Go to ASUS website and download/reinstall LAN/Network Adapter Drivers for your specific mobo. Then Reboot.

If those 2 steps didn't work then get a LAN card.
