you get two public bands, 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz. The 2.4Ghz band is what all the normal wireless stuff, laptops, decoders, wireless AP's and things run on. This is quite a congested band if you think about it.

The 5Ghz band is slightly more higher end, and much less congested. It is this band that the majority of the CTWUG runs their goodies on. A 8km link, if you have a clear line of sight, is absolutely no problem whatsoever if you are planning to play games with it. PMurgs is running a 40KM link, and granted he have some issues for various reasons, but my link is about 6KM long and I am getting very low latencies. (hopping over 5 different links gives me an increase in ping of only 4ms or 5ms)

If you are looking for good 5Ghz equipment, have a look at http://www.scoopdistribution.co.za/

you will most likely need a nice 24dBi or 27dBi grid on your side, here:

or alternatively, just get the full kit:

hey skoups....ek woon in montagu... dis lekker hier oppi plaas
the only interwebs we get here is via privare wireless network ...onto adsl
there are 2 guys who offer internet
1. breedenet
2.overberg
breedenet is in worcester, the prob is that their jumps from tower to tower is too big....roughly 80-120 km this relates to huge packet loss(or so i understand)
overberg is situated in montagu, he has just erected 2 new towers in our area 5.8ghz(not sure what this means)
the total wireless distance to my dedicated 4meg line i had installed in his shop = 8km
so if the math is correct..........i will be able to play online again
the only reason i cant get adsl here on the farm is because im 12km out of montagu, and adsl only works up to 5km

Baseline, where exactly do you stay? (plot yourself at www.ctwug.za.net) I am thinking if there is not a way for you to somewhow jump / connect to the CTWUG perhaps? The ranges there are quite impressive and the ping's exceptionally low during gaming time.
