z0mfg this game rocks the sockz0rs on MP!

General Gameplay:

Gave it a trial bash last night with leelo0270, SloDaz, Phatso and myself. After some initial faffing about with firewalls etc, we got the MP sorted for all four of us, and each of us took a different character and trotted off as a grrroup to slay things in eager anticipation of the goodness. We weren't disappointed...

As a grrroup, you level up fairly quickly (in 4 hrs we went from lvl 1-13 on MP), and the monsters are suitably tough no matter what level you are. Once you start seeing "Badass" creatures/humanoids, know that you are about to experience the pain, even clustered as a firing squad behind a screaming, slavering, hysterically-laughing, maniac Beserker (thanks, Daz) like the other 3 of us were.

*Be warned: If you liked the 'walk all over the baddies' element of Titan Quest, you will be receiving a nasty shock from this game; By the middle of last night's adventure, there were individual creatures that were poes-klapping our entire group all over the post-nuclear countryside.*

Missions are straight-forward and well-explained (at least as far as we got), and yield cash and/or weapon rewards. There are some funny little cut scenes to introduce new characters/baddie bosses, and the art style is fairly 'comic book' during these scenes. The general game play graphics are, however, fucking picturesque, and pretty low on the system-intensive side of things (even on my old graphics card {8800GTS} I can run everything on max eye candy).

Game play is increasingly reliant on group tactics as you progress to tougher opposition. It's not a case of everyone form a line and pwn the shit out of everything like a shooting gallery, unless you like being swamped by mutant dogs and/or their mutant owners. In certain areas, even our deviously thought-out strats weren't enough to prevent some or all of us getting raped by post-apocalyptic nasties. One thing I can tell you for sure from last night's escapade is that you DO NOT want to be separated from the group when there are bad creatures around; It will lead to nightmares...

Levelling up is supremely straight forward up to and including level 4. Only your overall damage and health increase (automatically) through these levels, so not much to write home about. At level 5, however, you unlock your character's main special ability, and from there on in, several skill trees open up for you to explore, and assign a skill to, with each new level. Use of particular types of weapons gradually increases your character's proficiency with that type of weapon, subsequently increasing your accuracy and damage when using them. Although the character type you are playing influences your starting proficiencies and skill development options wrt specific weapons and ammo, it seemed fairly open as to which form of fire power/weaponry you want to pursue as you get into the game.

Playing as a Hunter (Mordecai):

The Hunter is basically a long-range weapons user like a sniper. You have high accuracy with all weapons, but particular affinity for pistols (specifically revovlers) and sniper rifles, and a big, fuck off-shiny panga for melee encounters (One that looks like it could skin a crocodile. One that Mick Dundee would point to and say "This is a knoif!"). It takes less time with the sniper character for your weapon to 'settle' when in zoomed/scoped mode, allowing for more accurate and faster rate of fire when using long range guns (which almost made my sniping comparable to phatso's cos he was using the female 'Siren' character {moffie-pant!}).

As a hunter, you start the game with a (yes, you guessed it) sniper rifle and not much else, altho the first weapon chest is discovered shortly into the game and you can find a pistol there to complement your long range pwnage. In the earlier levels, a BF2-style 'headshot-with-sniper-rifle-followed-by-pistol-follow-up-to-finish-the-cunt' approach worked wonders on most nasties, but as the monsters get harder, you need to adjust your style of play to lurking and potting creatures repeatedly with the sniper rifle while the hardier squad members tackle them short-range with assault rifles and shotguns (Or big, ham-sized fists if they're a berserker).

Your hardiness/ability to take damage and keep fighting is pretty non-existent as a hunter, even when using a pretty hefty shield as I was last night. You have less health than the soldier or berserker, and can't phase walk out of danger like the Siren, so you obviously have to adjust your approach to fights accordingly. Monsters tend to make a bee-line for whomever has shot them last/is currently shooting them, so I found potting creatures as far away as possible yielded the best results wrt not being mauled into hunter minced meat while you desperately flail with your panga: Put a couple of sniper rifle rounds in a nasty while it's at a distance, and make sure there's a soldier/berserker between you and it by the time it gets close ;).

So far, I have used the level ups since skill tree unlock to max out the damage I do with sniper rifles, and increase my already-pretty-good accuracy with all weapons. That particular branch of skills continues into extra xp for killing with crits, increased damage for a short time when killing with sniper rifles, ability to pierce/ignore shields with long range weapons etc. The other 2 branches focus on increasing my basic special ability (some hunting falcon that shits fire on beasties which I've ignored so far), and kickassabilty with revolvers, respectively. Note that by level 9ish and onwards, even with my sniper damage maxed, there weren't many beasties I could kill solely with a sniper rifle, even if I put the first round in them from the other side of the map - beasties are made of pretty tough stuff when you have 4 players MP-ing...

All in all, the game play, graphics and grrroup fun of the game are fucking off the chart. If you don't have the game, make a plan cos there's some longevity and grrreat fun to be had from it. Can't wait to get home and fire up another MP session tonight. :fact:

EDIT: Would be cool if Daz, Phats and Meebo posted about the other 3 character types here...

Oh my hat - fun and seriously challenging game!

I played the Soldier and with my skill tree I get the funky Sentry gun deployment thing. There are loads of roll out options for it and I found it exceptionally difficult to decide where to go with it. I have options to make my character more accurate, do more damage with every weapon, have more health etc etc. Then I also have the options to upgrade my turret as support or medic for my entire squad and even upgrade the power/health/shield of my turret.

You get lured into a false sense of expectation in the game, what we found happening in the game was that in the beginning my soldier with me focusing on using my machine gun, was getting the most out of the ammo drops. The poor SMG and Sniper nublets had to keep buying ammo from the Vending machines and let me tell you, ammo disappears very quickly in this game.
This was true for most of the night, until we left for the second area load of the game. There we found Uber skags who simply tore us a new one wherever we went. From that point on, my ammo was completely scarce.

I initially upgraded my turret to provide some health regeneration for our group, which on the 1st level is very slow and pretty useless. In the beginning this was all well and good. After a while, seeing my crew continually complain about not getting ammo, I then added ammo supply, which on level one is pretty useless. At each level upgrade (and there are 5 levels for this) it doubles in output, so a good upgrade to Health or Supplies will be beneficial in the long run.
It’s tough to decide though since the landscape (not just the physical landscape) of the game changes so much from area to area.
With all these options to upgrade, bad guys getting rougher n tougher, it’s getting harder to chose what to do. On the one hand I can increase some of my damage – which is seriously needed at the point we’ve reached in game, then on the other hand, we really need health regeneration, however I suspect soon we’ll be finding some really good shields with health regeneration(I hope), then theres the ammo, you always need ammo.

What the game does well, is the proficiency of weapons, much like other RPG games out there like fallout, the more you use a weapon, the better you get at it, more critical damage, faster reloading, greater overall damage per bullet, accuracy, etc. My machine gun proficiency was up to level 6 last night and almost every shot was doing critical damage, but the Enemy was just getting SO powerful that it took 300 odd bullets from every group member to put them down. In my opinion, this is what really makes the game, it’s just not a walk in the park, it’s a challenge all the time.

Desperate attempts to make it out alive are the order of the day, making the online chatter frantic, full of laffs and always delivering satisfaction. One Elder Skag, if memory serves me correctly, took us about 10 minutes to take down and then we found that there were two!!!!

This is the game of the year folks, right here.

Oh quickly, another note.

Difficulty scaling, it's not linear. In fact a quartet is the hardest, the flip side of this though is that the quality of item drops is also scaled in this non-linear format.
So if you want an easy game, go single player.
A few laffs, but marginally harder, Duo
Some mayhem but decidedly harder, go for the Trio setup
I recommend however, the full quartet, maximum madness and epic ZOMG action!

I love this game. Really i do :D

That being said, let me give you a quick rundown on my initial issues ( the only bad news )

Installation went fine. Game wouldn't launch on first double-click of icon. Reboot fixed this. Game launched perfect. Could login to Gamespy account fine, accepted friend requests fine, could see games fine... Timeout on connecting. Tried to open ports and screw with firewall. Didn't work so uninstalled firewall (COMODO piece of shit, sob etc etc).

Ok, those were the only issues. Took a mere hour in total to fix all of that. Which is perfectly fine TBH.

Look n feel
Upon my first launch into Borderlands, the first words that came out of my mouth were "FUCK ME THIS LOOKS GOOD!!!!". Really, the style and GFX engine are beautiful and is really not like any other cell-shader game I have seen before. Its got a real "gritty" feel to it and you really get that wasteland-in-the-middle-of effing-nowhere. The HUD is set up in a good format and I really like all the bells and whistles. My initial feeling when running around and jumping was that of a slight bit of nausea, the wobble is quite intense... but I got used to very quickly. I suppose the FOV could be made slightly wider, but its not that big an issue. At full details on GFX, the game is beautiful. I found myself stopping often to look around and take it all in.

My Siren - I like playing female characters in games. Judge that how you wish ;)
First and foremost... Lilith, the Siren - AKA the Phasewalking hot bitch that crits HEAPS and can tear the FUCKING TIME AND SPACE CONTINUUM IN HALF!!! For reals, the character herself is easy on the eyes, and would be somewhat compared to a Rogue in WoW. Critting and stealthing and being all fuck-shit-up like. Any character can use any gun in this game, so that in itself posed a challenge... I used Sniper Rifles for looong range, Sub-machine guns for med-close range, and melee (more on this later) at point blank. Pistol for when I ran out of ammo, which happened a lot... Lets talk about Phasewalk, the Siren's special ability. Think of an EMP like explosion, followed by a blinding white light running at the speed of light and then reappearing... with ANOTHER explosion... Thats a short description but it basically shifts the Siren into another (very cool looking) dimension and allows you to move REALLY fast without your enemies seeing you.. This bracheted by AoE (area of effect) damage to everything around you... The Siren's 3 talent trees are Control - which is based on stunning and slowing down enemies, Elemental - which increases elemental damage (fire/shock/acid/explosive - types of ammo) and Assassination - crit damage amplified, melee + weapon damage increased and abilites to make "CRITICAL" all you see. For obvious reasons, I picked Assassination. But I can see myself trying out Elemental spec too.

Multiplayer
I don't think I stopped laughing last night.. Everything is classic. From the classy one-liners ("aah, that's gotta hurt!"), to the Berserker nerd-raging like ape-shit, to the sound of Midget Psyco's... In the beginning everyone kinda went mad and shot everything, but as the monsters got harder and harder, it seemed like we really needed to start planning encounters.. Which as mentioned previously works sometimes.. The game is definitely a challenge and really fun in MP. I haven't tried SP yet, but like all games, I imagine MP would be a tad more fun, while SP could suffice till you get 3 other people together.

Game of the Year. Not ground breaking or never-done-before shit. But the execution of the gameplay and the "87 GAZILLION DIFFERENT WEAPONS" and the sadistic comedy and the laughter that it causes, coupled with anything but a walkover of an experience, definitely put this up there amongst the the other big titles of 2009.

I find myself watching my clock at work... I need to get home.. I need to play BORDERLANDS!!! :gun:

I have only played SP thus far and I really do like what I get out of it! The game is not a walk over although from the sounds of it Multi-player rocks the socks...

I am thoroughly impressed they throw you straight into the game the there learning curve is virtually non existent! I love the clean HUD and the way the system responds to the game. Lvling is also sraight forward. I have chosen the Soldier because it includes some tanking elements like the Berserker.

I like to be the all rounder, I have notices that the skills tree lends its self to different play styles, from a support player to a straight forward mean machine!

I am enjoying this game and I cannot wait to get home and have a quick game once all is settled down in the house hold!

Mega's Review:

FRIGGIN AWESOME ASPECTS:
Art/design, level of detail
Humor
Cut scenes/boss intro's
Immersion
MP fun
Open play, relatively painless map transitions

Not so hot:
Games shouldn't require players to edit config files, the settings should be available in-game
Story gets lost a bit in MP mode
No AA with black lines around all objects?

Overall: Friggin awesome! Game of the Year etc etc

Have you seen this in 3D (with the glasses)?

In a word... FARK! :wow:
Even the splash pages... :woah:

Ok so I went out and got this game, also got a T-shirt because it was the last one in stock and some douchebag didn't come pick up his pre-order.

Anyway here are my thoughts, first the bad. Well most of it has been said, the no AA can really be noticable at time and my settings don't seem to save until I change the config file, even my key bindings aren't working.
I don't know if this is just my machine but the sound is not so good especially the direction i.e. if the claptrap is on my right/left it sounds better that when he is infornt. SOme time I hear a bad guy to my side but he is actually infront of me.

The good, well it is hell of a fun and that is just single player so far. Totally different from BF2 in the way you approach your enemies and fight. Even through there are 87 Gazillion guns I really like how there are just 6 or 7 types of ammo and you don't have to worry about finding specific ammom for every type of gun.

Also the level up and skill tree is really simple. So all in all it is a very cool game, I am on Level 21 Soldier already (I am sure most of you are on Level 35 or so). Once I hist level 25 with some cool weapons I will join you guys in MP

Dood, we're only @ like Level 28 -- You really do seem to level up quicker in Single Player, probably because FAF around time = 1 X FAF rather than 4 X FAF.
But yeah, if you're enjoying the Single Player, sheesh dood, you're in for a treat with the Multiplayer ... It's rougher, it's tougher and all round buffer :D

Paul

I specifically tried to level up as fast as I could so I could catch up with you guys.

Question about XP on MP (lol at acronyms), do you share XP amoung the team e.g. I kill a dude worht 1000XP, does everyone get 250XP or do I jsut get?

I have seen a couple of Class-Mods where it references "Team" stuff but I don't want to buy it (money is scarse) if it won't help

SlipperyDuck

XP and Cash is given equally.

ie. $25 falls on the floor and you pick it up. . . then everyone gets +$25
Same with XP, though, I suspect that you get a little bit more XP when you get the kill shot, having said that, the person with the lowest Level gets more XP than a higher level.
Also if someone is leaps ahead in terms of level, they get no XP @ all for killing the bad ones.. .. .

Hmmm does that apply to single player as well? I am at New Haven now, some of the mission take me back to The Badlands and when I kill those "little" skags (usually just with Melee) I don't get any XP points.

Every little Xp counts you know

P.S. You do realise that I hate you guys even more now for forcing me to become addicted to this and removing all my free time!

SoSheOhPathix

Remember, you're also getting XP for 'achievenments'... Go to your 'mission page' and press space to toggle through the lists. Each achievement you make gives you XP. The li'l ones, like 'kill 25 skags' you will get early on, but are worth less XP than the 'kill 10 000 skags' so the game is kinda designed to level out the playing field over time.
I just made level 29 soldier (support gunner) and I've noticed I only get 1XP for road-killing or shooting little bad guys (Bandits, Skags, Scythins).

I'm very keen on the class mods. I got a Soldier one that regenerates my teams ammo at 10 rounds/second, along with other features that aren't explained (+2 stash? etc.) so I never have to pick up ammop (neither does anyone else near me). I can stand in one spot and spray rockets into a fray (my launcher does 500 points damage, plus a x4 fire modifier) and never run out of ammo.
Add to that the turret spewing out rockets, healing, rearming, etc. and I am quite formidable.

I was playing MP with Shaolingtiger on Friday night, adn he went from level 4 to level 16 in about 2 hours, in my level 26 campaign. He did spend a fair amount of time immobile, but I managed to keep him from dying most of the time. So if your're looking for quick level-ups, just play alongside the big boys for a while

That is exactly what I am talking about, I think I saw this exact same mod and wasn't sure if it was worth buy (was flippen expensive)

Definitely a worthwhile buy.
Nothing sucks more than having to scrounge around for ammo, or having to use a lesser weapon because you don't have ammo for the best one (my combat rifle skill is at level 12, whereas my next highest, sniper rifle and SMG, are only at level 8).
Sure, ammo is cheap at the vending machines, but it still runs out during missions (I can take on and complete numerous missions before turning in, coining the XP in the process) and scratching about in the skag poop is tedious, not to mention not very profitable. All I ever pick up is money or weapons I want (or want to sell. Some are worth a lot of dough).

Paul

Well my Turret gives me ammo, so if I run out, I just goi it on the ground stand near by and it reloads me.

But I do have to wait for it to recharge

I have a Soldier on Lvl 26 now I believe, so I reckon I can cut it with the rest of ya'll now...

should be good... Still enjoying the game and killing bozzezzz finding out all the sweet spots... I've chosen to try and skill up all my weapon usage as evenly possible and am heavy into my infantry Skills although I do tend to run short on ammo I have bought a couple ammo mods to increase my capacity...

I also have a couple of really cool leader mods and such things...
