HI all sexy GRRR members
except QB he is just hot :ras:

Wasn't sure which section this was meant to be created in, so I hope it is ok that I've made this here.

To get to the point, I'm working on a little project and need your help.
I need to recreate the Dog Tag "engravings/raised" markings that are done in BF3. (example shown below)

I'll be using that blank Dog Tag as my "base" and need to add writing + colour to it.
I really don't have issues with the colour part. I really want to know/understand how they have gotten that engrave effect i.e. ALL ACES Dog Tag.
Thought it might have been adding noise to a layer and having it changed to a grey colour but it hasn't worked out.
Tried a few other things but just not getting it to look like theirs, would really prefer to have it exactly like theirs

So was wondering if you guys would be able to help me out :notworthy:

I believe the engrave effect is called emboss.

Tut Letterpress emboss text effect photoshop tutorial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNpQ_jIqMwA#)

Ok cool, now you know how to emboss, find a couple to tutorials on how the create a pattern overlay! Then emboss the type and then use the pattern overlay.

that should give you the effect you looking for, you might have to play around with the brush types and styles to create the correct type of pattern.

hope this helps.

Ye I figured they might use Bevel and Emboss on their design, if you look @ Battlelog is basically all over it.
Hate that effect though (personal opinon).
Just seems that the Battlelog is a very rushed job, quick simple effects applied and will be disappointed if the Dog Tags are the same.
Thanks for the help though, should have this project (pitch) ready by the end of the night.
I'll post a link here for you guys to see, maybe add comments for me

I've messed about with it - attached PSD and Output Gif.... embossing is easy... tweaking things with tricks are things you learn over time with photoshop....

Slippy, your light direction for the embossing looks like it was top right, going to bottom left? If so, it's out of kilter with the tag itself, which is bottom left to top right. (more or less)

what did my light direction ever do to you huh? HUH?

dude, if it were production or something I gave a hoot about, I'd have worried about matching light source and shadow, but since it was a POC (proof of concept), taking me ~30-60 seconds to throw together ... satisfaction with end product may vary :D :p
