So I got some good playing time in this weekend and I must say I'm addicted. Brink is frenetic and rewarding. Sure it's not Battlefield and its not Team Fortress either, but its something in-between. There are multiple objectives, depending on your class - which you can switch in game at any friendly command post. From reviving team mates, to planting explosives and guarding people and vehicles you'll have plenty to keep you busy. Everything in this game earns you xp, buffing your teamie's weapon or standing close to objectives and spotting infiltrators to mention a few.
All that xp gets spent on unlocking a higher rank/level which allows you to equip better attachments and customize your soldier further. The great thing about the customization is you can change body type from big (strong) to thin (agile) just by going back to the main menu. The same applies to weapon configurations. These small tweaks have a major impact on your ability to move quickly, reach places and hold choke-points. I've mostly been playing medic and solider, but I've just started with the operative and engineer - they have such cool abilities! Throwing molotovs, setting up guard guns, hacking enemy objectives and using enemy kits to camouflage and infiltrate.
The game-play centers around parkour and moving quickly and creatively back to objectives from your spawn. Most of the combat is close and corridor orientated, but it's not one dimensional because you have guys jumping down from levels above and flying out of tunnels everywhere! It's complete FPS madness and heaps of fun. The customization system has quite a lot of depth and the artwork is really interesting. So far the multiplayer experience has been great, but it seems like IS are providing the only server. It's been pretty full and some good games had. I've leveled up quite fast, but it helps to do the challenges and campaign. The great thing is no matter what format of the game you play (campaign, local custom or web) you earn xp and achievements.
The automated movement over random terrain is great because you can slide around corners while shooting and even shoot while knocked down, although it's a bit random and buggy at times. It seems that if you have reflexes of a cat and can handle the motion sickness, you will pick good paths and find a steady stream of kills (and xp!). It looks to me like the guys at Bethesda put quite a lot of effort into it and will most likely release good updates. Most of the guns have quite a large and random spray pattern that drops off sharply, so it seems a lot of factors including turning your mouse sens DOWN! and getting up close determine your success.
Would love to play with some teamies in a co-ordinated way and see what kind of game-play comes of that because you absolutely HAVE TO stay with the group in this game!! At $49.99 or R350.00 on Steam (I pre-ordered for a little less) it's a pretty penny. If you have the spare bob and would like something fun to break the BC2 routine, this is it :hooray:
My soldiers so far (you have one for each faction - each customized independently):
