Social Network is based on a book (I forget the name) that tells the story of Mark Suckerberg (ha ha I had to spell it like that) the founder (or rather co-founder) of FaceBook.

I am not one for biography type movies, haven't watch Ali (you know the one with Will smith that was Shot in Moz) or even Invictus but I heard good things about this movie, not from critics but people who actually watch movies for fun. If you read my review about Due Date and it not living up to the hype well, this is the total opposite.

It was extremely good, I don't know if it was because I had no expectation or if this really was a gem but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Unless you have been living under a rock and don't know the story of Mark and how facebook came to be, the following might be a bit of a spoiler, although that doesn't really matter as I knew the story and it didn't affect the movie.

The movie is split into the "past" and the "present", it continuously alternates between the law suits Mark is fighting (i.e. the present) and the past (how Facebook came about). In short he is battling one of the co-founders that was squeezed out and some other preppie guys (actually very funny dudes, well their characters anyway) who say he stole their idea.

I am pretty sure the director and screen writers used a certain amount of creative license when making the movie but the dialogue was fantastic, it was fast and intelligent. I suspect this was to try show you how smart this kid is and the world that he occupied. There are a couple 1 liner gems in there.

The movie flowed very nicely and you were never left wanting a scene to end or for it to hurry up and get to the point. What I found very interesting as well was that there was no hero and no villain, which I expected to be the case. I think most of the characters were portrayed with a fair amount of objectivity, except maybe for Shaun Parker (Played by Justin Timberlake) which I found to be a total douchebag, just like JT in real life, so that was excellent.

But the most surprising thing out of the whole movie was the MUSIC! The score was composed by Trent Reznor of Nine Nails fame (and it was quite clear where the influence came from) and it was damn near perfect.

For me music is hugely important in a movie, it can make a good movie great or a good movie mediocre. I hate it when they just lay over some generic music/sound that doesn't fit the visuals. Trent really out did himself here and the music completely complimented what was showing on screen, check out the rowing scene on the Thames river, I personally thought it was fucking brilliant even though it lasted less than a minute.

In conclusion

On the Fuck-Yeah-o-meter this movie gets a solid 9/10, it might not be a movie you would want to buy or test your new 50” LCD on but it is definitely worth the R40 movie ticket.
