If your ADSL supports it - sometimes it's much simpler for homes with multiple PC's (Like mine) to use PPPoE with whatever PC you have in particular - that you'd want to connect with alternate ISP login/password details.

If your current ADSL router is already using PPPoE LLC, then 9 times out of 10, a Desktop PPPoE connection still works - by "passing" alongside the currently configured PPPoE connection that has been configured on your ADSL modem for everyone else on the network - noting that your Desktop's PPPoE connection does not interfere, other than compete for whatever DSL connection bandwidth you have, ie. the speed of your line.

Anyway, I set it up at home - all my PC's at home remain unchanged and use my default MWeb ADSL via the MWeb login that exists on my Modem, whereas on my Gaming PC I make use of the Alternate account via a PPPoE connection.

Here are the screenshots:

1. First Get Properties of the Network Places, so that I can choose
Set up a New Connection or Network

2. I choose the 1st option to connect to the Internet via a broadband, blah blah blah

3. It tells me I'm already connected (via the Modem already having config and connected to the Internet), I can simply ignore this can continue

4. How do I want to connect? With Bananaz and Jam, no wait, Broadband PPPoE.

5. Put in the username and password and click connect. (Don't do this while you are downloading, the new connection becomes the default)

6. This what I see when I go back to step one after finishing the config and choosing
Change Adapter Settings
from the left hand panel - to see my Ethernet Adapter and my new PPPoE adapter

7. The screen you will see when you double click the PPPoE adapter you just set up.

Thats a poor system to setup. For R350 you can have a proper system. Buy a Mikrotik 750 and use to to dial multiple pppoe connections at once, then just use the pppoe connection of your choice from any pc on your network based on the destination. You can also set it up so only certain pc's used the different routes, so only your games pc goes to sgs servers via webafrica instead of mweb, but your none games pc still goes via mweb to any sgs servers, say for downloading demos off the dogaming site or sgs ftp server. The 750 also has logging, so you can actually see when you link went down if you were away from you pc, plus scripting capabilites to schedule stuff for instance.

Attached is a screenshot of my custom route list for my home network with my 750G (plain 750 would work just as well).

Murgs with microtek 750 can you split your local/international relatively easily as well? i.e. import a list, or would you have to manually enter all the IP ranges?

@ Murgs the Mikrotek routers or software is great I in fact work with it through the office, it is incredibly powerful software. Do you have the routing card installed on your Windows box? or have you set-up a specific linux box with the software?

Geth... im not sure sure how easy it would be to split local and international on a Mikrotik routerboard. Entering all the ip ranges into the winbox control software would be painfull. The Mikrotik devices do support uploading files to them and there is limited scripting capabilities so perhaps there is a way to do it more automated. But in all likely hood, in this case, you might just want to run trafficsplitter on your pc rather than going the Mikrotik route. Personally, I'd just suggest getting an uncapped account :)

Ic3... I have a Mikrotik 750G which is a small box with an atheros processor in it with 5 gigabit ports on it and it comes preloaded with RouterOs. I use that to manage my internet connection to my network, my friend who has a Ubiquiti 5Ghz wireless link to me and is 700m away and leeches internet from me (throttled to 384k in RouterOs).
The plain Mikrotik 750 (slightly slower processor than the G model and only 100Mbps ports) is R350 and it has RouterOs on it. Personally, I think its an increddible bargain for the amount of functionality the device has.

I also have a Mikrotik 433 which also has RouterOs on it and a Mikrotik r52Hn 5Ghz radio card plugged in which handles my 40km link over False Bay to the main ctwug group. It is in a small enclosure attached to the pole with my two antennas aimed over the bay. I plan to add another couple radio cards to the 433 if I can organise a couple more distant wireless links to ctwug.

Link to all the Mikrotik boards with RouteOs installed that are available localy: http://www.scoopdistribution.co.za/index.php?cPath=100_34 (just note the 250GS is an entirely different product and comes with SwOS not RouterOs. I have one of these too on my home network)

I've added some more information about how I use my 750G in our private clan area. Want to keep my home network map which is attached within grrr.

Thanks dude. As for getting an uncapped acc, if I was home more and there were no peering issues I would. As things stand I am trying to lower my service bills when I am out of the country.

The above is a simple - easy, no-cost (other than the alternate ISP connection) solution for MWEB uncapped account co-existing with another account specifically for gaming.

My idea is for ease of use without interfering with all the other equipment using the Uncapped account.

It's a use it / don't use it scenario.

For me, I've got a free monthly 1Gb from FNBConnect since I have a bank account with them, so while Mweb is not 100% free peered with everyone, I've got the simplest solution to continue playing local servers without having to re-configure my ADSL modem.

A Worthwhile note is that once ACTIVE (The PPPoE connected) ALL traffic on that PC uses that link for internet connectivity and doesnt use the MWEB account at all. - until you click disconnect

It is actually easy, check this out:

http://wiki.ctwug.za.net/Ros3_Split_Local_International

It looks like TFyre is already managing a list of the IPs' so should be straight forward to get it up and running.

Mega, to give you an example of what Murgs and myself manage to do on the WUG this weekend is the following.

1. My ADSL line has been dead for the last week or so
2. It really frustrated me.
3. It really REALLY frustrated me.
4. It really really really frustrated me when Telkom came out a week later, (saturday) to tell me the line is fine... phoned webafrica, "oh, we forgot to tell you we've changed your password". For phuck sakes!
5. Anyevent, rant over, in order for me to get access onto the internet, what we've done was that I've basically used the CTWUG to proxy through to Murgs who was so kind to setup a nice little service on his side. That allowed me at least some access to the internet while it gave him the option to control what speed I am getting, the priority of my packets etc.

We had some difficulties in browsing all the websites, grrr, being one of them, but I recon the cause of that could be assigned to the timing when this happened, being download time. The Southern Suburbs are screaming to get more bandwidth up to the Northen Suberbs so I would not be surprised that some of the connections between him and me was pretty saturated.

Anyevent, remember when gaming time the pings between me and murgs was in the 16ms range, running pings now (outside of gaming time) is running on average up to 732ms. Which shows you what the difference is between a properly setup gaming environment and an oversaturated network.

Adios

Cool, so if we all join the CWUG, we can all pwn Murgs' interwebbles? Murgs will be busy with server admin duties and won't even have time to change his status on Facebook.
I see, it is useful after all...
