Hi GRRR.

I don’t know about you all, but I am busy suffering from withdrawal symptoms due to the lack of a proper LAN. As such, without any further ado, let’s get down to business. :yikes:

I am keen to arrange my second LAN  for 2010 for the weekend of the 6th of May. :hooray: I trust that this is sufficient notification for those prospective LAN’ners to mentally prepare those around them for yet another dramatic event. :sulk:

For the benefit of those that have never participated in a LAN at Norita, this is more or less how it goes down: :psycho:

1. We start anything from 20:00 the Friday evening with several “reality-constrained-individuals” only joining the Saturday morning. The network will be up ‘til the last man goes home. :die:
2. Bring your own computer; any computer will do as long as it has a NIC in it and have some form of graphics card. If you don’t have a computer, fear not I have a couple of spares that can be pressed into service. If you need a new computer, let me know and I can provide you with a quote… :retard:
3. Group sanity suggests that we stick to headsets only, full range speakers are not a good idea at a LAN. :banned:
4. Bring whatever you plan to consume. I’ll show you where the fridge, ice and glasses are, you help yourself. If there are no veggies amongst us, I was thinking to braai the Saturday evening. There is a SPAR and Checkers very close by in case anyone needs to go for refills. :ky:
5. I have enough sleeping space for those that do need to “meditate” a little bit. Gamers don’t sleep… :sex:
6. Reality-constrained-individuals that plan to go straight from the LAN back to reality should bring their own toothbrush…
7. Everyone should bring their own deodorant :dogrun:
8. A swimming pool is provided; bring your own towel. :shadey:
9. If you have a good game that you think we should play, then bring it with. The games played are a very simple matter of democracy if you can convince other people to play your preferred game, then that game will be played. :candi:
10. I will not stop anybody from copying whatever, bring enough hard drives. :hooray:
11. We tend to be around 8 regulars, but I can cater for around 25 people with minimum issues and around 40 with some additional logistics. I just need to know as soon as possible who will be joining, and how many people will be coming. :fact:
12. Any other questions (and RSVP) can be send to LAN@skoups.com. If you'd like more details, just ask. :stupid:
13. Internet access will again be available. :yikes:

So, in summary: :snipe:
Date: 7th and 8th of May 2010.
Time: Starting the 7th May at 20:00, and ending when the last person leaves on Sunday.
Place: Norita 13, Rosendal, Durbanvile, Cape Town, South Africa, Planet Earth. See directions below
Games: Anything / Everything.
Food: Bring whatever you plan to consume. We could club together on Saturday and go and buy meat for a braai.

Probably not good for me either. I'm in Jozi the week before, don't think the missus will look to kindly on my coming home and then pissing off again immediately.

TBH, best for me is going to be any thing in June/July. I move out of the house end May, so will be packing during that month - but after that I'm on my own for 6 weeks as Camilla and the kids are in Sweden. Plenty gaming time for me then.

Ice: Tai Kai - Lan, Lan - Tai Kai, dude, this is not a difficult decission!

Dragonne: No problem Jarrod, there is a fair chance that Ursula may need to depart to the USA for a 4 week trip in June / July as well, which means, there will DEFINATELY be another one in June / July.

Ok, some preliminary numbers are in and from the sounds of it, it is going to be another epic lan with only Dragonne, Ice and Panda not able to attend from the previous event. But in turn we have more time from Eggman, Voetsek, Ghalima, SirNukeALot, and a couple of others. We may even have a surprise appearance from some of the iB guys. (awaiting confirmation)

I have aranged some additional tables for us (since the ones we've used last time has now finally been converted into a single humangous bookshelve). I've already secured us some additional bandwidth (from two different ISPs in case seacom sucks again), I've cleaned up some of my hard drives. Removed the firewalls. Increased the DHCP. Enabled wireless (phuck knows who need wireless, but in case you need wireless you have wireless). Enabled 2Gb/s teaming support on the server. Tested all the network switches. Rewired some of the dodgy network cables. Double checked the power. I even managed to arrange better sleeping conditions.

All in all, this should be fun.

*Sigh*

Slight fokaapi.

I drove my Corsa bakkie through a water "puddle" tonight, which turned out to be a HUGE pool of water.
Ended up getting water up the air-intake (that some idiot Kraut thought would work better lower down in the grill) and siezed the motor.

So that should be a joyfull amount of dosh. :yikes:

So I am at the mercy of Etienne for transport... but hopefully it will be fine.

Cheerio. :weep:

I am awaiting my work schedule for the weekend atm, but I will definitely stick my head in for a drink at the very least. Hopefully Stubacca can help with transport again. :prod:

Debrief

Ok, a hectic weekend, herewith a quick debrief of the events. The first to arrive was R4v3n_Z4 Thursday afternoon. He assisted me in setting up everything, including carrying the tables and the likes.

The following people participated over the weekend: Christo (Voetsek), Jacques (BadAssJack), Paul (NextCampaign), William (?), Mike (Viking), Gerald (Varkwortels), Raymond (R4v3n_Z4), Dante (Eggman), Ettienne (?), Rikus (?), Ursula (LittleBear), Tex (?), and also F34r_m3.

The following games were played (by some or by all):
- Supreme Commander Forged Alliance
- BattleField 2 Bad Company
- Insane
- Trackmania
- Crysis Wars
- Golf
- Tiger Woods
- Drift
- Age of Empires (yes, that 10 year+ old game…)

I think the game that was the most participated in was Insane, with 8 players joining Return the Flag. (the game have a restriction of only 8).

Eggman did not like the idea of having downloads interfere with his game time,as such, he brought together 2 computers, one for his games, and one for dedicated downloads (with 6TB of data).

Baring Voetsek, we all dozed off on Saturday morning from around 06:00AM to around 07:30AM. Having a flu definitely did not help. The last people only left Saturday at around midnight.

Somebody made a request that we have DC++ up and running at the next lan, this should assist some people to find and download files easier, and also from multiple sources. I could not get a hub up and running during the LAN (I too played some games you know), but I have since managed to get a local hub running which means, for the next LAN, it will be fully operational. I suggest, if you want to use that, start hashing your shares before the next LAN. Those that don’t know how it works, let me know and I could tell you.

Finally, an interesting observation, there were quite a few different rigs at the event, most of them had an intel CPU, but the real cool thing, there was JUST Samsung LCD’s. Each and every person had an LCD, and they were only Samsung ones. I should have taken a picture and perhaps get some endorsement for the next LAN from them. The most represented mice was that of Logitech (the G5) followed by Razers.

All in all, a good event with no major hiccups.

Got the thing at 1:30PM and it was in my bakkie by 5PM. :D
