Hey all. I've been jamming some Star Wars: The Old Republic lately, and it's a pretty decent MMO, especially if you like your Star Wars (obviously).

Would be great if any of you lot came to to play a bit and try it out. It's free to play up to level 50, which is most of the way up to the level cap. Bioware are well known for their RPG storylines, and SW:TOR is no exception. The character and faction storylines are well built, fully voice acted, and close to the quality level of a Bioware single player RPG.

When this first came out I really wanted to play this but then BF3 came out and I didn't have the time. With BF4 not being as good as I hope I may give this a look.

I loved KOTOR 1&2 but I heard the F2P version is a bit shitty, some big features missing if you don't pay?

Then again it's only what I've heard, never actually tried the game so might just be keen

From what I've seen, the content for F2P is the same as for subscribers. There are a few restrictions, can be seen here:

It's definitely worth spending the $5 to get preferred status. The ability to sprint from level 1 is quite a timesaver, as are the other benefits.

How big is the client to download? Does it download an installer? I saw the "installer" file was 28mb does that download and install or does it just download the file needed?

THe reason I ask is that I am sure this game will be upwards of 10GB and running a 2mb line means I will more than likely need to pause at some point so I would prefer to use a download manager if possible

The file that you download is an installer. However, while it is downloading the game client files, you can pause/shut down at any time, and it'll resume when you restart it. So it effectively is a download manager.

Files are upwards of 20GB BTW, so be prepared for a long download. I'm also on 2Mb, and it took the best part of last weekend to download. The cool thing is though, once it's downloaded a portion of the files (about 30% I think), you can start playing the game, you are just limited to your starting world i.e. up to about level 10. It will continue to background load the files while you play.

Ok cool, I am sitting at 79GB usage for the last 30 days so it will take me a while to download or I will be throttled at 90GB.

I am going away on easter weekend so maybe I will start the download before I leave

I started a smuggler too on Red Eclipse last night and played for about 3 or 4 levels. Interesting game and nice looking artwork. What does bother me a lot about the combat (smuggler maybe specifically) is the fluidity. The cover system is very strange and I hope it gets more fluid as you level up.

Will see how it goes, so far I must be 100% honest, I am not blown away, but I am also not scared off and want to give it a shot :)

@Phats - As I mentioned before, I'm not sure if this will be your game. As a WoW vet, you may find TOR to be too much of the same thing? Certainly it's not new age like GW2 was.

But... it is Star Wars, and it's well constructed.

yeah - at the moment I don't like the combat system either - feels like a terrible bolt on - but, story is very good, well everything else is very good.

Perhaps the thing with "pointless" cover system has to do with leveling up the char where cover attributes get higher, coz I agree it seems totally pointless at this stage, other than allowing certain abilities to be used or not.

I know nothing about cover systems? I guess, playing as a Jedi, one has no cover?

Certainly the melee combat works much as other MMOs. Use basic attacks to build up focus for more powerful actions, and of course role specific abilities. I haven't picked my secondary class yet (going to play Guardian (tank)), so haven't seen the aggro building skills yet. But afaik they are there.

Lee, I wonder if its just the smuggler (and starter) combination where we have to constantly use cover. I want to be stealthy roguey vanish appear kill vanish etc... Thats why because apparently the scoundrel (advanced class) is like that. Apparently ...

Lets see how things go on, if no improvement by like level 10 or so, I will go redeye jedi styles and use the force n shit.

You don't get your advanced class until level 10, so you may wait to run beyond there and see how it goes. Early leveling is just teaching you the basics anyway.
