Hi guys, I have the following to sell:

http://www.ikonix.co.za/cfi-b8283ju-8-bay-das-external-tower-enclosure.html

it is an 8 bay DAS enclosure that will accept any 3.5" SATA drives. The technology it uses is something called SATA port multiplier. A RAID card is included which will need a PCI-Express slot on your motherboard. You then basically plug two e-SATA cables (1 metre each, also included) into this RAID card and the other end into the device. Install the drivers, and the RAID software and that's about it.

The software is straight forward to use, but I would not recommend something like RAID 5 as the RAID controller is a little bit slow for that. But you could always JBOD the drives and run RAID 5 from your OS. That is pretty much what I've done.

I've bought the DAS, December 2010, and todate it has done it's job satisfactory. I recently upgraded my external storage units to custom build SAS expanders which allows me slightly more speed and options.

For more technical info, refer to my forum posts here:
http://forums.storagereview.com/index.php/topic/29369-das-internal-raid-slow-speed/

Reasonable offers please guys.

Ps. The enclosure has been located in my server room in a server rack so it is still in very good condition

I think that this item is a bit specialised for most of your clan mates to be interested in. I would be quite keen in order to expand my server storage space (I only have 5 SATA ports on the thing), but the fact that we're planning on moving soon means that i won't really have need for the extra space (no WUG, no large files to store).

Jarrod, the fact that you are moving, is that not enough reason for you to stack up on movies now? I mean, you plug in 8x4TB drives into this baby, in a RAID 5 formation it will give you no less than 28TB of data storage space. You know how much that is? It is like almost a fifth of Paul's porn collection!

Skoup's, as dit die USB 3.0 een was het ek dit gevat. But alas...
I currently have an e-sata + USB 3.0 5-Bay Lian-Li and was looking at this unit, but also with USB 3.0 or both.

I have too many friends that don't have e-sata that I take my drives to.

Good luck though.
