Terraria is an adventure game. It features customizable characters, randomly generated worlds, day/night cycles (http://Terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Day/Night_Cycle), deformable terrain, and a crafting system that allows the player to "live off the land": crafting (http://Terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Crafting) items that are required for survival. The crafting system gives the player the freedom to manipulate their environment (http://Terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Environment) by doing anything from digging mines to building towns; it is their prerogative.
The game also features online multiplayer (http://Terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Multiplayer). As is rumoured, it is not capped at 8 players.

Getting started

http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120405181205/terraria/images/thumb/6/69/Terraria_Newbie_Tutorial_part_1/400px-Terraria_Newbie_Tutorial_part_1.jpg (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/File:Terraria_Newbie_Tutorial_part_1)
The very first thing you should do is build yourself a shelter. A hole in the ground will be enough if you are short on time, but if you want a proper house, just cut the Trees (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Tree) around you with an axe and build yourself a shack. As long as it protects you from monsters that emerge at night time, you and your Guide will be safe. Now that you have a safe sanctuary, you will most likely want to go exploring. Feel free to do so. Here's a list of good things to collect:

Ore (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Ores): There are various ore types in this game, the four main ores are: gold, silver, iron and copper. They can all be refined using a furnace (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Furnace) and crafted into weapons (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Weapons), armor (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Armor), or various tools (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Tools) using an anvil (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Anvil).
Mushrooms (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Mushrooms): There are three kinds of mushrooms. Normal (red) mushrooms grow on or near the surface and are relatively easy to find. they are also used in many potions (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Potions). Red Mushrooms are a cheap way to restore health in the first parts of your gameplay. They restore 15 HP. Vile (purple) mushrooms grow on or near the surface inside of corrupted areas and will be harder to find, with its only use being able to be crafted into Vile Powder (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Vile_Powder) . Glowing (blue) mushrooms grow deep underground, and they restore 25 HP.
Plants (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Vegetation):You may find Daybloom (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Daybloom) around your spawn area, Waterleaf (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Waterleaf) in deserts and Blinkroot (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Blinkroot) in caves. There are also many other types of plants such as the fire blossom which can be found through futher progression in the game. Save them up, as they're used in many useful potions.
Pots (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Pot): These are found in caves. They may contain everything from coins (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Coins) to potions (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Potions), Bombs (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Bomb), or even rare items. Break them by hitting them with any weapon or (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Weapons) tool (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Tool) (e.g. Hammer (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Hammer)).
Chests (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Chest): The better version of pots, often hiding rare accessories and loads of coins. If you're lucky enough you could find a Gold Chest (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Gold_Chest) (sometimes reqires a gold key to unlock), which contains even rarer items and powerful weapons, and there are shadow chests which are usually found in Hell. It is often a good idea to collect the chest with a Hammer (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Hammer), saving you 2 iron bars (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Iron_Bar) and 8 wood (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Wood).
Fallen Star (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Fallen_Star): These only appear at night, and are easily noticeable for they emit light. They fall from the sky. 10 of these can be crafted into a Mana Crystal (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Mana_Crystal), which will give you +20 maximum Mana. Mana isn't used until later in the game (to fuel various magical items), but it's still recommended you collect them as you go. The maximum mana you can reach with Mana Crystals alone is 200. You can check how much mana you have by moving your mouse over the blue stars in the top right-hand corner of your screen.
Life (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Crystal_Heart) Crystal: These are found mainly underground. Hitting them with a hammer and then using them will give you an extra heart (+20 hp). The maximum amount of health that you can have is 400. You can check how many health points you have by moving your mouse over the hearts at the top right hand corner of the screen. Using a Life Crystal will also let a Nurse (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Nurse) join you (Provided you have a free house (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/House))

Once the day ends and nighttime begins, either get back to your shelter and hide in safety, or get ready to slay some Zombies and Demon eyes. It is strongly suggested you look into making a bow (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Bow) and arrows (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Arrow), as they combine for good damage and range. If you happen to get hurt, the heart count in the top right-hand corner of the screen will decrease. When it reaches 0, you will die (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Death). When you die you'll; 1. Lose half of the money you have on you (Softcore), 2. Drop your whole inventory (Mediumcore), or 3. Turn into a ghost, and your character will be deleted (Hardcore). To prevent this, you will need to eat food (such as Mushrooms (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Mushrooms) or Goldfish (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Goldfish)) or use some potions. To do this, simply have the edible item you wish to eat in the item bar at the top, click on it, then click anywhere on the background, and your characters' health will be slightly refilled. A faster and easier way to heal is by clicking the "H" key, AND (more conveniently) the food doesn't necessarily need to be on your hotbar (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Hotbar). You can also refill your health using Potions (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Potions#Healing_Potion) which can be made using an Alchemy Station (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Alchemy_Station). Another way to avoid dying is by hitting the Escape key and clicking Save and Exit before you die (this is easier if you have autopause on). You can refill your health instantly (for a fee) if you have access to a Nurse (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Nurse). It's now up to you to discover the rest. Who knows what you will find in this mysterious world? If you happen to have any questions, look them up in the FAQ below or on the Tips & Tricks (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Tips_%26_Tricks) page. If you have any remaining questions, feel free to ask them in this thread. Good ones can be added to the FAQ. If you have a Grappling Hook (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Grappling_Hook) you can quick use it by pressing the E button and aim it with your mouse, the hook just needs to be in your inventory.
Tips for progressing into the game

Your starting equipment will include a Copper Pickaxe (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Copper_Pickaxe), a Copper Axe (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Copper_Axe) and a Copper Shortsword (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Copper_Shortsword).The latter is barely decent for killing weak enemies such as Slimes (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Slime), but it is advisable to craft a Broadsword (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Broadsword) as soon as possible, as their wide swing arc makes them more reliable for melee combat.
Items that can be combined for crafting will show "Material" when moused over.If you're unsure about what to do with an item, show it to the Guide (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Guide).
Be sure to build a properly-defended base:placing background walls will prevent monsters from spawning inside, and having NPCs (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/NPC) join you will also reduce the spawn rate of enemies nearby. Most NPCs will join you when you do certain feats (such as finding explosives or having a certain wealth), while you might stumble upon some others while exploring underground.
If you can't handle night-time monsters, dig down from your shelter to make a mineshaft and dig for ores and treasures.Remember however to bring torches to light the way and platforms to get back to the surface, and beware the monsters that inhabit the lower layers. And don't forget that if you release water, it will estinguish your torches, so place more than one.
To brew potions, you'll need to craft Bottles (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Bottle) (which are made with a Furnace to create Glass, which is made from Sand), fill them up with Water (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Water) (you can keep a small pond in your base for this purpose), and use an Alchemy Stand (made by placing a glass bottle on a table)
Beware of Blood Moon (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Blood_Moon) nights:monsters will spawn in thick ranks and storm your base, so make sure to set up proper defenses to keep them at bay.The simplest way is to dig pits and moats deep enough to prevent zombies from jumping out. If you have a problem with zombies breaking through your doors simply put a block beside the door, zombies then can not break the door down:as you gather different materials you'll be able to set up more complex (and deadly) contraptions.
Wearing three pieces of armor of the same material (for example Copper Leggings+Armor+Helmet) will provide several bonuses, the most notable of which is an increase of overall defense.
Corruption (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Corruption) will slowly spread on the surface.Be sure to place wooden barriers or plant Sunflowers (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Sunflower) to stave it off. Take note that this strategy does not work after the Wall of Flesh has been defeated and the player enters hard mode.
Once you are well-equipped, you may try to brave the Corruption (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Corruption) and its Chasms (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Chasm).You can obtain useful items by finding Shadow Orbs (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Shadow_Orb) (Bring explosives to dig them out first) or use Demon Altars (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Demon_Altar) to summon bosses, who will drop plenty of money and Demonite Ore (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Demonite_Ore).
Once you have the Vendor NPC, Selling items to him will gain you money. You can buy a range of items from the Vendor including Mining Helmet, Piggy Bank and Torches.
