Tribes: Ascend is a free to play title from the Tribes franchise offered on Steam.
If anyone has played the old Tribes at LAN's then you'll know that this game offers a lot when it comes to multi-player! It's a fast paced shooter that has a uncanny Unreal theme to it but with a unique take on game play and tactics.
With a Class based system players can choose what class (unit) will best suite their game play.
From Heavies through to advanced scouts / Snipers, each class comes with a unique load out that can be customized via in game XP points or alternatively via a Micro purchase via credit card.
I've played the Soldier, Pathfinder, Juggernaut and Engineer. There are 8 classes to choose from in total that offer a great range in different game play styles.
Tribes offers a great selection of game types to:
Team Death Match
Capture the Flag
Control Points (BF Style)
5v5 Arena
All these offer a different pace and when working with a group of players that understand teamwork, the games that can be had are incredibly rewarding.
The game play dynamic is very interesting with Jet packs and the ability to Ski!
Skiing is an integral part of the game play allowing you to utilise downhill momentum to shoot your character into the air at incredible speeds and heights provided your ski-ability is up to scratch.
This affects how you engage enemy's and one on one battles can last until all your ammo is depleted! With the different arch and angles that players travel during game play, kills and shots are managed on a prediction basis.
i.e. one has to predict were your opponent is going to land and then pre-fire at that location hopefully hitting your target as X marks the spot!
There are no South African servers at present and I've been playing in the Eurozone - London servers. These run at on average 200 to 160 ms. It's very playable and you get a good laugh from eating Europeans with a high ping.
With an integrated medal and achievement system collecting certain kill badges is a great way to remain engaged in the game and rewarded for every action that is taken.
All in all I'd score this game with a 4 out of 5 big fat thumbs UP!
